An object that crashed in eastern Poland overnight appears to have been a Russian missile, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said Thursday, after authorities found a crater and scattered debris in a field following reports of an explosion, according to Reuters, via the Moscow Times. Tusk said the object was likely a Kh-101 missile, an air-launched cruise missile rather than a ballistic one despite some early wire reports using that term, adding officials still wanted to be 100% certain about the type of missile and who launched it, and said there was no direct threat since it landed in an uninhabited area and forces were ready to shoot it down had it continued flying.
Poland’s military command said radar detected an unidentified object moving westward across its airspace at 3:40 a.m. local time before it disappeared, and a helicopter crew located the probable crash site in farmland near the village of Tarnawa-Kolonia, in the eastern Lublin region, Reuters reported. The crater measured about 10 meters wide and sat roughly 2 kilometers from the nearest homes, and sirens sounded across the region as a precaution.
Poland’s defense minister, Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, said the object was “most likely” a Kh-101 air-launched cruise missile and that Warsaw was in contact with NATO allies, according to Newsweek. An incursion of this kind, landing in an unpopulated area with no confirmed attacker or casualties, typically falls under NATO’s Article 4 consultation mechanism, which allows allies to raise and assess a shared threat, rather than Article 5, the mutual-defense clause reserved for armed attacks on alliance territory.
The suspected missile crossed into Poland during one of Russia’s largest overnight barrages on Ukraine in weeks, when 74 missiles and 284 drones struck Kyiv and nine other regions, killing at least eight people and reaching as far west as Lviv, near the Polish border, according to ABC News.
It is not the first time Russian weapons have entered Polish territory during the war; a Russian missile fragment was found near Bydgoszcz in 2022, and Poland shot down Russian drones over its airspace in 2025. Each incident has renewed pressure on NATO to clarify how it would respond if an incursion caused casualties on alliance territory.
