Putin Visits Disputed Kuril Island, Hardening Rift With Japan

Russian President Vladimir Putin visited Iturup Island, known in Japan as Etorofu, on Wednesday, making his first trip to the disputed southern Kuril Islands and prompting a sharp diplomatic protest from Tokyo. Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi condemned the visit in a televised address as "absolutely unacceptable", saying it "wounds the feelings of the Japanese people" and would make restoring bilateral relations significantly more difficult. Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi reiterated that the islands "are an inherent part of Japan's territory both historically and under international law," while Japan's Foreign Ministry summoned Russian Ambassador Nikolay Nozdrev to lodge a formal diplomatic protest. Russia responded in sharper terms than a routine diplomatic rebuke. Security Council Deputy Chairman Dmitry Medvedev dismissed Japan's protest, saying the islands "were, are, and will remain Russian land" and warning that anyone unwilling to accept that reality would face "monstrous consequences". The dispute dates to the final days…

North Korea Used AI to Infiltrate U.S. Tech Jobs

North Korea has quietly placed thousands of IT workers inside U.S. companies using stolen and rented identities, artificial intelligence tools and remote-work arrangements to generate hard currency for the regime while evading international sanctions, according to a Wall Street Journal investigation. Investigators say generative AI has become an increasingly important tool throughout the scheme. According to Okta researchers, operatives use AI to draft résumés, translate conversations in real time and generate responses during technical interviews. Real-time deepfake technology has also advanced to the point that 11 governments issued a joint advisory in 2026 warning employers that live video interviews alone are no longer sufficient to verify an applicant's identity. Some American facilitators are themselves victims of identity theft, while others knowingly participate by renting out their identities in exchange for a share of the salary, Fortune reported. The U.N. Panel of Experts has linked the IT-worker programme to North Korea's…

Iran Hardens War Doctrine

Iran's leadership is reorganizing its military command for a longer, more offensive confrontation with the United States and Israel, merging key command structures and installing IRGC-aligned officials in top security posts. Bloomberg reported that IRGC General Mohammad Reza Naqdi described a shift to an "offensive doctrine" aimed at taking operations "into enemy territory" when ordered, and said Iran's ballistic missile and drone production remains well above current use. The same reporting said Khamenei named IRGC veteran Mohsen Rezaei to head the Supreme National Security Council and ordered Major General Ali Abdollahi to complete a merger of the Armed Forces General Staff with the Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters, reversing a 2016 split. Newly appointed IRGC commander Ahmad Vahidi has taken a hardline public stance against U.S. concessions on reopening the Strait of Hormuz. The command merger brings strategic planning and wartime execution under one structure, reducing friction between headquarters and field…

Taiwan Tests Defenses Against Chinese Blockade

Taiwan staged its first joint navy–coast guard anti-blockade escort exercise on Wednesday, rehearsing how commercial shipping could continue reaching the island during a potential Chinese attempt to isolate it. The drill simulated the protection of a merchant vessel bound for two ports on Taiwan's east coast, with a minesweeper clearing a navigation channel ahead while navy and Coast Guard Administration (CGA) vessels provided escort and security, according to the Ministry of National Defense. The CGA said it was the first time it had formally conducted this type of operation alongside the navy. The exercise formed part of the live-fire phase of Han Kuang 42, Taiwan's annual military exercise running from August 5 to 14, which mobilizes reservists for ten days and nine nights of around-the-clock operations. The exercise highlights how Taiwan's defence planning has evolved beyond preparing for an amphibious invasion alone. Increasing attention is now being given to scenarios…

North Korea Fires Missile Ahead of U.S.–South Korea Drills

North Korea fired a ballistic missile toward the Sea of Japan at around 6 a.m. Wednesday, its second launch in six days and the 11th suspected missile test this year, according to South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff, as reported by Reuters. The missile was launched from the eastern coastal area of Wonsan and flew about 700 kilometers, reaching a maximum altitude of roughly 90 kilometers before landing in the sea outside Japan's exclusive economic zone, according to South Korean and Japanese authorities. The previous launch took place on August 6, underscoring an accelerating testing tempo ahead of major allied military exercises. Japan's Defense Ministry confirmed the launch and lodged a formal protest with North Korea through diplomatic channels at its embassy in Beijing. Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi condemned the test as a threat to regional and international security. South Korea's military said it had strengthened surveillance and was maintaining…

IEA Slashes Oil Supply Forecast as Hormuz Remains Closed

The International Energy Agency (IEA) on Wednesday sharply lowered its forecast for global oil supply in 2026, warning that continued disruption in the Middle East is pushing the market deeper into deficit. The revision, published in the IEA's August Oil Market Report and reported by Reuters, projects global oil supply will fall by 4.3 million barrels per day this year, a steeper decline than the 3.7 million bpd contraction forecast in July, bringing total 2026 supply to 102.02 million bpd. The IEA attributed the downgrade to the continuing closure of the Strait of Hormuz, the U.S. blockade of Iranian exports, renewed attacks in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait and lower Kazakh CPC Blend exports. A ceasefire and memorandum of understanding aimed at ending the Iran war collapsed last month, after which tanker attacks in Hormuz resumed alongside renewed Houthi strikes in the Red Sea. Gulf oil loadings through Hormuz peaked at…
