US intelligence officials are investigating whether Russia helped Iran attack CIA facilities by providing targeting intelligence or enhanced drone technology, although no firm conclusion has been reached. Moscow denied involvement.
At least two CIA-linked sites were struck in March: the agency’s station inside the US Embassy in Riyadh and another facility in eastern Iraq. A Western intelligence assessment judged Russian involvement likely, while two officials said Russian-enhanced Shahed drones were used in Riyadh.
Russia has become a major producer and developer of the Iranian-designed weapon. Its domestically manufactured Geran variants incorporate improved navigation, engines and larger warheads, and Moscow launches thousands against Ukraine each month. Russia has also built supply chains around Chinese engines and components, while a separate Russian drone project in China has been reported.
That industrial capacity means Russian-made Shahed derivatives need not remain confined to Ukraine. Confirmation that Moscow supplied Iran with upgraded drones or targeting support would mark a serious escalation in Russian-Iranian military cooperation.
